Contract size is the standardized quantity or multiplier behind one futures contract. For index futures, point value is usually the multiplier; for commodities, the contract represents a stated physical quantity.
| Index example | NQ = $20 × index |
|---|---|
| Commodity example | GC = 100 troy ounces |
| Use | P&L and notional exposure |
How it works
Multiply price by the contract multiplier to estimate notional value; multiply price change by point value for P&L.
- Define the contract and expiration month
- Convert the price move into points and ticks
- Multiply by the contract's verified point or tick value
- Account for fees, liquidity, and risk limits
Worked example
The quote is not the contract value. A two-contract position moving 10 ticks changes by 20 total contract-ticks. The dollar result equals those contract-ticks multiplied by the product's tick value.
Risk and common mistakes
Never reuse a multiplier from a similarly named micro or E-mini product.
- Confusing margin with maximum possible loss
- Using the wrong micro or E-mini multiplier
- Ignoring expiration, maintenance breaks, or economic events
- Sizing from desired profit instead of predefined risk
